Chasing Waterfalls: Casaroro Falls

The majestic Casaroro Falls is located in the town of Valencia (more than 9 km West of Dumaguete).

Getting There

You can take a jeep from Dumaguete City which costs less than Php 20. Unloading point is right in the center of the town plaza where there are several motorcycles you can hire to take you to the falls. Fare costs around Php 100 per person. If using a private vehicle, follow the concrete road passing through the Forest Camp. It will lead you straight to the falls. They have a concrete parking area in the vicinity.

The Awesome Experience

Upon arriving we were asked to pay an entrance fee of Php 10. We were given the option to hire a tour guide to bring us to the falls. This costs around Php 200. For first time or inexperienced trekkers, I recommend getting one.

We then took the 330+ steps down. Yes, 330+!! The concrete walkway from the bottom of the staircase leading to the viewing deck and also the hanging bridge got destroyed during the Tropical Storm Sendong last December 2011.

Once we reached the bottom of the torturous stairs, I though the hard part was over. Nope. I was so wrong. We had to scramble through huge boulders and slippery rocks. Well had to scramble. (haha!) My two companions were just like taking a stroll at the park. Then we had to cross the river hopping from one rock to another to get to the falls.

Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, else you will have to go barefoot since the “path” tends to get very slippery. Be prepared to get your shoes/feet wet. And don’t forget to bring a bottle of water.

You can go swimming as the water is cold and refreshing. It will definitely soothe your tired muscles.

Sit back. Relax. Have a picnic. Enjoy the beautiful Casaroro Falls.
